JSR has developed and commercialized a polymer electrolyte membrane for fuel cells that can operate at temperatures below freezing point. It has demonstrated operation in a wider temperature range than conventional fluorine-based membranes.
JSR’s aromatic hydrocarbon membrane consists out of alternating rigid hydrophilic sulfonic acid-bearing segments and flexible hydrophobic polymeric sub-units. The bicontinuous microphase-separated morphology of the membrane contributes to the excellent water resistance of the membrane while keeping high proton conductivity.
The JSR membrane exhibits the same chemical stability as conventional poly (perfluorosulfonic acid) membranes, while outperforming them in power output of the fuel cell, life time and temperature range.
JSR researchers have received the Award of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan (SPSJ) in 2006 for the development of the novel aromatic polymer electrolyte membrane with high performance.
